FAQ's

What funding is available for employers who have trainees?

Employers with existing employees, applying for Certificate III traineeships may be entitled to claim funding from the Commonwealth Government that could be used to offset some of their costs. However, just because a person is eligible to be on a traineeship does not automatically mean an employer can claim funding for them.

For example if a trainee already has a qualification (achieved less than 7 years ago) which they could use to be employed, the employer would not be entitled to claim any funding for that person.

Where an employer is eligible to claim funding for a trainee, they can claim up to $4000 for a person commencing a Certificate III traineeship. Also, if the trainee has a disability, is indigenous or if they are in a job listed as skills shortage in a rural and regional area, there may be further funding available.

What is a Training Package?

A Training Package is a consistent and reliable set of nationally endorsed standards and qualifications for recognising and assessing people's skills. A Training Package describes the skills and knowledge needed to perform effectively in the workplace without prescribing how an individual should be trained.

Training Packages are developed by industry through national Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs), recognised Bodies or by enterprises to meet the identified training needs of specific industries or industry sectors. To gain national endorsement, developers must provide evidence of extensive consultation and support within the industry area or enterprise.

Each Training Package provides an integrated set of nationally endorsed competency standards, assessment guidelines and qualifications for a specific industry, industry sector or enterprise. This enables qualifications to be awarded through the direct assessment of competencies which encourages the development and delivery of training which suits individual needs.

Why use a Training Package?

Training Packages provide your employees with qualifications which are recognised nationally. A recognised qualification is therefore a guarantee that the skills of the employee are, formally recognised and consistent nationally across the industry or industry sector.

(This makes it easier for employees to move between States and Territories and for employers to hire people from interstate). The other major advantage of Training Packages is their flexibility. This gives you and your employees the choice of how, when and where the training is undertaken. It also means your employees are trained and gain qualifications in areas which specifically suit your enterprise needs.

What is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)?

Registered Training Organisations (RTO's) deliver training and assessment services on-the-job, off-the-job or via other more flexible methods. RTO's work closely with individual Trainees and employers to develop a training plan which will result in a recognised qualification.

What if my employees already have the skills but have not been formally trained. Can they still gain a qualification?

Yes. Under the competency based training system, experienced and skilled employees can have their existing skills assessed and a qualification issued without necessarily undergoing any additional training. Recognised qualifications under the new training system recognise the competency of an employee rather than the completion of a course.

Who decides what training the Trainee needs to do?

The training is agreed between the employer, RTO and Trainee - this training is set and structured to meet industry and government criteria and the Training Package provides the inherent flexibility to enable tailoring to suit each employer's requirements.
